CHALLENGE THE ASSUMPTIONS

Electric Fans Beneficial in Extreme Heat and Humidity

Drug War Increased Homicide Rates

In the short term, the Mexican government's war against drugs increased the average murder rate in regions subjected to military-style interventions, a new statistical analysis suggests. The Mexican government--beginning in December 2006 during former President Felipe Calderón's term and continuing through current President Enrique Peña Nieto's administration--has been fighting an internal war against drug traffickers. A 2013 report by Human Rights Watch estimates 60,000 people were killed between 2006 and 2012 as a result of the military interventions and drug cartels fighting each other for control of territory. Longer a Cow Lies Down, More Likely It Is To Stand Up

New research revealed key patterns that could improve health monitoring and welfare management. Data from dairy cows showed that the longer a cow lies down, the more likely it is to stand up within 15 minutes. However, standing for extended periods did not significantly increase the likelihood of lying down soon after. A minimum lying bout of 4 minutes was identified, reducing the number of recorded episodes by up to 88%, without affecting overall standing or lying time significantly. These findings could help refine strategies for oestrus detection, early disorder diagnosis, and housing adjustments to enhance cow welfare. to be most resistant to heat. [link]

Good Mental Health Can Improve Longevity

A long-term study by NUS researchers has found that positive mental states can significantly improve longevity. Tracking over a thousand Singaporean Chinese seniors for more than two decades, the Singapore Chinese Health Study discovered that mentally optimistic individuals, especially those physically fit, had better survival odds. Even those with frail bodies but positive mindsets outlived their dejected counterparts. The study highlighted the importance of both psychological well-being and physical health, with financial security and regular exercise also playing a role. Experts suggest that fostering resilience in seniors, especially through family support, can lead to longer, more fulfilling lives. [link]
